ACT는 English, Math, Reading, Science와 선택사항인 Writing으로 구성되어 있으며 교과과정을 기반으로 한 학업성취도 평가 시험입니다. 시험 점수는 1~36점으로 구성되어 있으며, 교과과정을 기반으로 한 학문적 지식을 요구하는 시험이라 SAT 보다는 다소 쉽게 여겨질 수 있습니다.
SAT는 ACT와 달리 시험 점수가 누적되므로 준비되지 않은 상태에서 보는 것은 바람직하지 않습니다. 본인이 충분히 준비되었다고 판단될 때 응시하는 것이 고득점을 얻을 수 있는 비결입니다. ACT는 SAT시험과 달리 오답에 대한 감점이 없고 국내 학생들에게 유리한 과학과목이 포함돼 고득점을 받기가 상대적으로 쉽다고 말하나 어떤 시험 이든 꾸준한 노력이 필요하다는 사실을 잊지 마시기 바랍니다. SAT와 ACT는 거의 모든 대학에서 같은 기준으로 대등하게 평가됩니다. 하버드의 경우 아래와 같습니다.
Q : What standardized tests does Harvard require?
A : For the Class of 2011, students may submit either the "old" SAT I or ACT taken before March 2005, or the new SAT or ACT (which must include the writing section). Students must also submit three SAT II exams of their choosing.
Q : Are there minimum required SAT I, ACT or SAT II scores?
A : Harvard does not have clearly defined, required minimum scores; however, the majority of students admitted to the College represent a range of scores from roughly 600 to 800 on each section of the SAT I as well as on the SAT II Subject Tests. We regard test results as helpful indicators of academic ability and achievement when considered thoughtfully among many other factors.
Q : Which SAT II Subject Tests should students take?
A : To satisfy our application requirements, applicants must take three SAT II Subject Tests and may choose any three subjects, using the following guidelines:
* The English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) is not acceptable.
* Candidates whose native language is not English should not take an SAT II test in their native language as one of the three required tests.
* Candidates who took the Writing (in English) subject test when it was offered (January 2005 or earlier) are strongly encouraged to include the results in their applications.
