민사고 - 해외유학 Extra Curricular Activities

미국의 각 대학들은 학생들의 입학을 판정할 때 학업 능력만을 가지고 결정하지 않습니다. 학업 능력의 우수함이 대단히 중요하긴 하지만 그것만큼 중요한 요소로 다양한 과외 활동을 통하여 학생이 어떻게 사회에 기여하고 왔고, 리더십이 있으며, 앞으로 사회에 어떻게 기여할 수 있을지를 판단하게 됩니다. 즉 공부만 잘하는 학생이 입학 허가를 받기란 생각보다 쉽지 않다는 것입니다. 공부를 아무리 잘 해도 사회에 기여하는 부분이 하나도 없다면 대학을 졸업하고도 사회에 기여할 가능성이 없기 때문에 학생에게 입학 허가를 주기를 꺼려할 수 있습니다.

과외 활동이 중요하다고 해서 학업에 우선하여 과외 활동에 전념하는 학생들이 가끔 있습니다. 또한 과외 활동이 부족한 경우 짧은 시간에 여러 기관을 전전하여 많은 활동을 한 것처럼 서류를 만들기도 합니다. 하지만 과외 활동이 입학에 영향을 끼치자면 그 활동이 지속적이고 학생의 자발성에 따라 이루어지는 것이어야 합니다. 입학을 위해 만들어진 활동 목록은 중요하게 간주되지 않는다는 말입니다. 또한 활동이 중요하다고 이것저것 아무것이나 많이 활동을 하는 것도 바람직하지 않습니다. 관심의 다양함이라는 긍정적인 효과를 거둘 수는 있겠지만 자칫하면 중심이 없는 학생으로 판단될 수 있습니다. 여러 활동은 자신이 관심 있는 분야에서 꾸준하게 하는 것이 가장 좋은 영향을 주게 될 것입니다. 즉 대학 입학하기 위한 활동이 아니라 자신의 생활 속에서 이루어지는 활동을 보여주는 것이 가장 알찬 효과를 거둘 것입니다.

Q : How important are extracurricular activities in admissions decisions?

A : Each case is different. Harvard seeks to enroll well-rounded students as well as a well-rounded first-year class. Thus, some students distinguish themselves for admission due to their unusual academic promise through experience or achievements in study or research. Other students present compelling cases because they are more "well rounded" - they have contributed in many different  ways to their schools or communities. Still other successful applicants are "well lopsided," with demonstrated excellence in one particular endeavor - academic, extracurricular or otherwise. Some students bring perspectives formed by unusual  personal circumstances or experiences. Like all colleges, we seek to admit the  most interesting, able and diverse class possible.

Q : How important is participating in extra-curricular activities?

A : Berkeley values a diverse student body where interests run the gamut. In our comprehensive review, you will be looked at as a total person. Sustained passion for and involvement in extra-curricular activities help us see your potential as a leader and your ability to contribute to our campus community.  So achievement in these areas may influence our decision, but it may or may not be a deciding factor.
